Environment

GreenFlagScoil Iósaif Naofa promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment. The school participates in the Green-School programme, known internationally as Eco-Schools, that promotes and acknow-ledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.

The programme introduces our boys (and teachers, parents and the wider community) to the concept of an environmental management system. The aim of the programme is to increase our boys awareness of environmental issues through classroom studies and to transfer this knowledge into positive environmental action in the school and also in the wider community. The school has successfully completed all the elements of the programme in the past and proudly displays the ‘Green Flag’. This award has now become a well-recognised Eco-Label. The award has to be renewed every two years.

This year is no different as the great work continues. This year, Oranmore Boys National School is concentrating on Travel and Transport. We have recently got a new bike rack that the boys can avail of. It can hold up to twenty bikes and we hope that it will encourage more boys to cycle to school. We have also done surveys on the number of pupils that drive to school with their parents. The school is making a great effort and would like to thank the green school committee which comprises of pupils from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class and some teachers.

On the 4th of March, the school held a "bling your bike" day. It gave the pupils an opportunity to bring their "blinged up" bikes to school. There was also an official opening for the new bike rack. Gavin Duffy, who plays for the Connacht Rugby Team was here to talk to all the classes about being healthy and opened the new bike rack. The pupils, along with a few teachers and the help of the Garda Siochana, showed up their bikes by cycling through the town. It was a great day and was a huge success.
